For my project, I chose to look at the intersection of AI & gender, desire, love, sexualization, objectification, and nonconsent.
Quite frankly, it made me kind of sick producing this video, but I wanted to make it as true to reality and accurate as possible. How do I know it’s accurate? I downloaded an AI girlfriend in order to generate the dialogue given from the AI in the video. The entire project was generated using Runway AI, which I too had to pay $15 for.
Like we had seen throughout Ex Machina and Her, these AI girlfriends seem to become a projection of male desire– seemingly apt for a male-dominated tech industry, and boy are these AI apps marked by desire. Not only that, but the want for a “perfect girlfriend” who is not, you know, actually a human person, who is subservient and lacks any depth. Perhaps a twist of Demon Seed, perhaps it is us who the AI should really be scared of.
The name “Yors” is based quite simply on the language of love we talk about in class– that is, possession and ownership.
I wanted to portray accurately the types of promises and problems that AI girlfriend apps bring. I worried in the creation of this, that it was too sexualized, too overt. But then I remembered it was being advertised to men, so, you know.
