between dog and wolf

“Has it started yet?” my neighbor asked her companion, as if somehow someone would know that kind of thing.
Across the floor another audience member has been rapt for what seems like hours. Probably multiple years. Perhaps ones staggered by 5s or 0s.
A metal scarf dragging, one of the more elegant attendees stumbled at the edge of our row as he texted furiously, probably to a partner trying to find parking, or a ticket, or the house keys. Later after George’s words wafted like dark chocolate through our ears, and after a box of groundnuts was passed around, said companion entered. They found no seats together. And they missed the savoring.
My own dog fell asleep at my feet. Big toe on right foot broken, she rested there through the Fall season.
