Doing so requires integrating models of the replication of viruses with the dynamics of generation of immune responses (virology and immunology).

At the between-host scale, we explore the dynamics of spread of infections between individuals in the population (epidemiology).

Linking processes at within-host and epidemiological scales allows us to address basic questions on the roles of immunity, ecology and evolution on the emergence of pathogens and changes in their virulence.

A current focus of my research is the dynamics of responses to influenza and viruses that exhibit strain variation.
