Case Competitions 2012-2013 Season

Duff & Phelps

Zheng Chen (14), Haibei Ju (14) and Victoria Tao (14) captured Third Place in the 4th annual Duff & Phelps YOUniversity Deal Challenge in March. Professor Kevin Crowley was their advisor. The team worked to solve a complex transaction in a stage of the deal-making process.

The Deloitte Case Competition was held at Goizueta on April 12, 2013 with ten teams of five members each vying for the gold. The case dealt with inadequate hiring at a company and its expansion into Mexico. Teams were tasked with providing solutions from both a Human Capital and Strategic perspective. Faizan Bhatty (14), Andrew Graf(14), Ning Yang(14), Eddie Mulder(14) and Aakash Parlecha secured 1st place, winning $250 for the team.

Faizan Bhatty (14), Derek Kopen (13) and Nicole Vournazos (14) participated in the second annual Competition on Management Information Systems at the University of Minnesota April 3-6th.  The case focused on Target’s desire to expand their customer base through innovative, technological solutions.

Nicole Vournazos (14) and Ray Moon (14) captured the Gold and $500 on March 25 in the 2013 Predictive Analytics Throwdown, sponsored by Goizueta’s Information Systems & Operations Management  Academic Area. The students were predicting whether 3 docking stations for the bike share program in D.C. were full, empty or neither, at 4 time points per day over a 5 day period.  The team of Jamie Landman(13), Jeff Meng, Aaron Weiner(15) Shannon Lin(15) and Howell Zheng(14) took Silver and $250 and Yige Yao’s (15)model captured Bronze and $100. Professor Elliot Bendoly organized the event.

David Seibert (13),Michael Simon(13) and Jahi Villinger (14) along with 3 MBA team members came in 1st Place in the Goizueta Real Estate Case Competition on February 22. The team made a recommendation to bondholders regarding the foreclosure of the Bank of America Plaza building in Atlanta. They received $1000 and a lunch invitation by the judge, Lynne O’Brien, Director of Corporate Real Estate at Coca-Cola.

Xiao Cheng (13), Yunjing Li (14), Michael Simon (13) and Nicole Vournazos (14) represented Goizueta at the 9th annual McDonough Hilltop Business Strategy Challenge at Georgetown University January 30-February 2, 2013. They competed against 15 top-ranked business schools in the nation and the world on a strategy case for a non-profit organization.

Every November, PricewaterhouseCoopers invites 50 schools nationwide to compete in the xACT competition. The winning team from each school receives a cash prize and is invited to compete nationally to become one of five finalist teams. The five finalists are then invited to make their presentations at PricewaterhouseCoopers’ New York office.

Teams are composed of five students each, working as consultants for a fictitious client. They have two weeks to research a business issue and develop a 12-minute presentation. Each team is assigned a PricewaterhouseCoopers mentor.

30 BBA teams competed in xACT on November 2, organized by Professor Mary Sevier. First place was awarded to Matt O’Brien (14), Jenny Li (14), Caroline Capponi (15), Matt Coombs and Sarah Elliott (15).

Pocket Aces members, securing second place, were Mengting Lu (14), Rui Tao (14), Jennifer Lin, Michael Sheu and Saier Zeng. Clairvoyant Strategies, placing third, was made up of Linhuang Qiu (14), Aakash Parlecha, Faizan Bhatty(14), Xinyue Pan(15) and Tegh Singh.

Carly Basner (14), Alexander Chen (14)and James Jin (14) represented Goizueta at the seventh annual Fisher College of Business Biz Quiz competition held on November 9, 10 and 11. Student teams from 18 universities came to Ohio State to be tested on their knowledge of current business events using a fast-paced game show format. They were quizzed on articles from the Wall St. Journal from the last six weeks. Meredith Farahmand (14) coached the team.

Rodrigo Laniado (14), Benjamin Ong (Exchange student), Michael Ordway(14) and Ning Yang(14) participated in the fifth annual Michigan Interactive Investments Undergraduate Investment Conference at the Ross School of Business October 26-28. They worked three weeks on a stock pitch for Amarin, an Irish biopharmaceutical company focused on the treatment of cardiovascular disease.

Kara Ann Maynard (14) and William Heise IV (14) were awarded Midwest Region runner-up at the University of Arizona’s Eller 2012 Collegiate Ethics Case Competition which took place October 25-27.  They prepared a case over a two-week period on whether the Maryland governor should allow drilling in the Marcellus Shale.
