Francesco Evangelista Receives Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award

Francesco Evangelista has been selected as a Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar for 2018. The Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation, established in 1946, aims to “advance the science of chemistry, chemical engineering, and related sciences as a means of improving human relations and circumstances throughout the world.” The award, given to only 13 individuals nationwide, recognizes young faculty who have “created an outstanding independent body of scholarship and are deeply committed to education.” The $75,000 unrestricted research grant will help fund Dr. Evangelista’s ongoing work on quantum renormalization group methods for excited states of strongly correlated electrons.

Dr. Tianquan (Tim) Lian Awarded $7.5 Million for Fuel Cell Research

Dr. Tianquan (Tim) Lian was recently awarded $7.5 million from the U.S. Department of Defense for research on the electrochemical basis of fuel cell technology. Research in the Lian lab centers around the advancement of solar energy conversion particularly through the preparation, characterization, and fundamental understanding of photovoltaic and photocatalytic nanomaterials. The tools and techniques being developed in the Lian lab will contribute to the advancement of fuel cell technology, supporting the widespread efforts for innovation and discovery.

Dr. Dennis Liotta Receives the Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry

Dr. Dennis Liotta received the American Chemical Society Alfred Burger Award in Medicinal Chemistry for 2018 for inventing antiviral drugs taken by more than 90% of persons infected with HIV in the United States. The award, established in 1978 by GlaxoSmithKline, recognizes outstanding contributions to research in medicinal chemistry. Dr. Liotta will be presenting an award address at the spring meeting of the ACS Division of Medicinal Chemistry.

This award is the most recent in Dr. Liotta’s impressive collection of accolades. He is the recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest award given by Emory University,  the 2005 Herty Medal, sponsored by the GA Section of the ACS, the 2011 IP Legends Award, sponsored by Georgia State University College of Law and J. Mack Robinson College of Business, and the 2003 Biomedical Industry Growth Award, sponsored by the Georgia Biomedical Partnership. In addition, Dr. Liotta was elected to the National Academy of Inventors in 2014 and the Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame in 2010, and he received Honorary Doctor of Science degrees from both the University of Queensland and Queens college.

13th Annual Emerson Center Lectureship Award Symposium

On November 2nd, 2017, the Emerson Center held its 13th annual Lectureship Award Symposium. The theme this year was “Sustainable Energy: Fundamental Principles, Multidisciplinary Approaches, and Progress.” This year’s lectureship award winner, Dr. Emily Carter from Princeton University, gave the Keynote presentation entitled Quantum Mechanics Derived Solutions for Sustainable Energy. During her talk, Dr. Carter summarized her use of quantum mechanics “to help accelerate discovery, understanding, and optimization of materials for sustainable energy conversion processes.”

Her presentation was followed by talks from Dr. Christopher Jones, Dr. Jean-Luc Bredas, and Dr. Vince Conticello on topics ranging from atmospheric CO2 extraction to organic electronics to peptide and protein nanomaterials. These talks were proceeded by a poster session, during which students and postdocs were given the opportunity to present their research. Brandon Haines was the Poster Award winner .

Victor Ma Receives Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award

Victor Ma, a fourth-year graduate student in the lab of Dr. Khalid Salaita, was recently selected as one of twenty-six Predoctoroal to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award Fellows from the National Institute of Health. This award will provide Victor with two years of funding to complete his doctoral thesis and an additional four years of funding for future postdoc training. In the Salaita lab, with co-mentorship by Dr. Brian Evavold, Victor’s research focuses on developing technologies to study mechanobiology at the molecular scale. With an ultimate goal of establishing an alternative mechanism for regulating T cell activity, he studies the roles of mechanical forces in T cell activation, whether these forces are coordinately controlled by mechano-sensitive proteins, and the importance of these forces for T cell biological function. The findings from these studies can provide insight into a potential strategy for developing effective immunotherapies.

In his postdoc, Victor plans on transitioning into the field of tumor immunology, where he hopes to capitalize on his skillset to elucidate the physical mechanisms responsible for preventing T cells from interacting with tumor cells. “My ultimate career goal is to become an independent investigator at a research-intensive university, where I can assume teaching duties and direct a research lab that combines knowledge from various disciplines to innovate career research,” says Victor. “This award will surely serve as a stepping stone to help achieve my goal!”

Bill Wuest Receives 2017 ACS Infectious Diseases Young Investigator Award

Bill WuestBill Wuest has been named one of three recipients of the 2017 ACS Infectious Disease Young Investigator Award given by ACS Infectious Diseases and the ACS Division of Biological Chemistry.  Winners received a plaque, an award of $1,000, and up to $500 in travel reimbursement to attend the 2017 ACS Fall National Meeting in Washington, D.C., and present at an ACS Division of Biological Chemistry symposium in their honor. In addition, they were honored at the ACS Infectious Diseases Young Investigator Awards Symposium during the meeting.

What’s next in your research?

With my group’s recent move to Emory University, I felt that this would be an ideal time to expand our research focus beyond bacterial biofilms and look into other areas antibacterial research. More specifically, we are looking to expand our “narrow-spectrum” research program with a focus on Pseudomonad-specific therapies in collaboration with the CF-Atlanta group. Likewise, we also plan to work closely with the Antibiotic Resistance Center here at Emory to further investigate mechanisms of antibiotic resistance development by both using our current, and continuing to develop, chemical probes.

Francesco Evangelista Recognized at Phi Beta Kappa Ceremony

Professor Francesco Evangelista and chemistry student Junchu Zeng were both recognized for their accomplishments at the Phi Beta Kappa initiation ceremony at Emory on Tuesday, November 15th, 2016 in Canon Chapel. Students elected to Phi eta Kappa are asked to name a faculty member “who has encouraged and helped students to excel, and who exemplifies intellectual rigor and enthusiasm for scholarly pursuits.”

The Emory College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Gamma of Georgia, was founded in 1929. Emory students are elected to the society based on scholarship, breadth of culture, and general promise. Ten percent of U.S. colleges and universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters and chapters select only ten percent of their arts and sciences graduates to join.

ChEmory Recognized with ACS Green Chapter Award

Emory’s American Chemical Society-affiliated undergraduate club, ChEmory, has been recognized as a Green Chemistry Student Chapter for the third year running. The award provides national recognition for ACS student chapters who have shown outstanding commitment to incorporating green chemistry into their annual activities. The judges praised ChEmory for their work drawing connections between traditional chemistry demonstrations and green chemistry ideas like pollution prevention and sustainable product design.

ChEmory also received an honorable mention for ACS Chapter-at-Large, placing them in the top fifteen percent of chapters across the country.

ChEmory kicked off the year with their first general body meeting on September 7th. ChEmory’s next event will be a coffee talk with Dr. Don Batisky, the Executive Director of Emory’s Pre-Health Mentoring Office taking place TODAY, Wednesday, September 21st at 5:30pm in Atwood 316. ChEmory members are invited to share coffee and conversation about approaching the pre-medical track through chemistry.
