AIS argues that data illustration is \u201cfor advancing theories\u201d and \u201cfor journalism or story-telling.\u201d By contrast data visualization \u201cgenerate[s] discovery and greater perspective.\u201d I love this distinction, although I\u2019m not sure I like the specific language. Tukey famously argued that data visualization was for developing new theories. Drawing on Tukey, I would use the phrase \u201cexploratory visualization\u201d for techniques that allow us to poke around the data, searching for trends and patterns. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tableausoftware.com\/\">Tableau<\/a>\u00a0is the great commercial product and <a href=\"http:\/\/stats.math.uni-augsburg.de\/mondrian\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mondrian<\/a> by Martin Theus is a wonderful freeware application. By contrast, once we have a thesis, we need to convince our audience. That\u2019s \u201cexpository data visualization\u201d and it calls for different tools. The R package ggplot2 (http:\/\/www.ggplot2.org) is my choice. The terms \u201cexpository\u201d versus \u201cexploratory\u201d resonate with freshman comp more that standard data analysis, but that\u2019s the point.
