Scholars FAQ

I am interested in the program but am not affiliated with any of the participating institutions. Can I still apply to the program?

Unfortunately, the COALESCE training program currently requires an affiliation or support from a participating institution.

I am interested in pursuing a degree, is COALESCE a degree or credit granting program?

COALESCE is a mentored research training program, therefore, you will not be awarded a degree or educational credit for your participation.

If I’m selected to participate in the program, can I choose my mentors?

Yes, scholars will be paired with mentors of their choice and according to research interests. Each scholar will have a primary (in-country) mentor and a secondary (Emory-based) mentor. Scholars will also have an opportunity to work with additional mentors with content expertise in the trainee’s research area at collaborating institutions, as needed

How will scholars be selected to participate in the program?

Program applications will be reviewed in two stages. First, a preliminary review will be conducted by program staff to determine applicant eligibility. Applications deemed eligible will proceed to the second stage of review for evaluation by program directors on the basis of credentials, research experience, and program fit.

If I’m not selected to participate in the current year’s program cohort, can I reapply for a subsequent program year?

If you have previously applied for the Scholars Program and you were not selected, you may be eligible to reapply. Applicants may only submit a maximum of two applications to the program. Once you reach the maximum number of allowed submissions, any subsequent submissions will be returned without review.

If I was previously selected but unable to attend the program due to extenuating circumstances, can I reapply for a subsequent program year?

It depends. We will review on a case-by-case basis.
