Jan. 2008.\u00a0 Introduction to RDF, the abstract model, how it&#8217;s used, best practices for deployment and querying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a id=\"Texts\">Texts, Tutorials<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/linkeddatabook.com\/book\">Linked Data:\u00a0 Evolving the Web into a Global Data Space<\/a>, 2011, by Tom Heath and Christian Bizer.\u00a0 Good, readable and comprehensive overview of the technology and state of linked data.<\/li>\n<li>Semantic Web for the Working Ontologist by Dean Allemang and Jim Hendler Book (paper only right now).\u00a0 The 2008 first edition is cataloged for &#8220;Office Use&#8221; and various personal copies are floating around; Laura has a personal copy of the 2011 2nd edition which incorporates revisions to OWL and an office use copy is on order.\u00a0 This is a meaty and more technical book about actually applying RDF and ontologies.<\/li>\n<li>Some W3C official documentation:\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/standards\/semanticweb\/\">Semantic Web<\/a> page provides an overall introduction and links to overviews and further links to standards activity in 5 areas (Linked Data, Inference, Vocabularies, Query, and Vertical Applications);\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/standards\/techs\/rdf#w3c_all\">RDF Current Status<\/a> page links to official standards documentation and primers; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2001\/sw\/wiki\/RDF\">RDF wiki page<\/a> also links to tools, resources and revision discussions.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/standards\/techs\/rdfa#w3c_all\">RDFa Current Status<\/a> and other standards are there also.\u00a0 Published standards usually include overviews, such as the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/2004\/REC-rdf-primer-20040210\/\"><strong> <\/strong><strong>RDF Primer<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/2009\/REC-owl2-primer-20091027\/\">OWL Primer.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkeddatatools.com\/semantic-web-basics\">Introducing Linked Data and The Semantic Web<\/a> provided by LinkedDataTools.com, an informational site which also provides some open source tools (with promise of more tools under development, perhaps with commercial feature3s).\u00a0 An alternate take on the basics, with illustrations.\u00a0 Covers<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/videolectures.net\/iswc08_heath_hpldw\/\">How to Publish Linked Data on the Web<\/a> is a tutorial by Tom Heath, Michael Hausenblas, Chris Bizer, Richard Cyganiak, Olaf Hartig, from ISWC2008, Karlsruhe, Germany. For those who like me, who don&#8217;t like to read but watch something.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/freeyourmetadata.org\/\">Free your metadata<\/a>, a set of video tutorials and instructions produced at the Multimedia Lab, Ghent University and Free University of Brussels, by 3 enthusiastic young men, teaches how to use Google Refine with extensions to clean data and reconcile vocabularies.<\/li>\n<li>Slides from several lectures (starting with Lecture 7) in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dur.ac.uk\/p.h.shaw\/teaching\/ais\/\">&#8220;Advanced Information Systems&#8221; course from Durham University<\/a>, taught by William W. Song and Patricia Shaw, are about RDF, RDFS, Ontologies, OWL, Reification and other topics of interest.\u00a0 These could provide another &#8220;take&#8221; on the concepts.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.co-ode.org\/resources\/tutorials\/intro\/slides\/OWLFoundationsSlides.pdf\">An Introduction to RDF(S) and a Quick Tour of OWL<\/a>, a University of Manchester ontology tutorial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a id=\"Communities\">Communities, blogs, organizations<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lod-lam.net\/\">LOD-LAM (Linked Open Data in Libraries, Archives and Museums)<\/a>.\u00a0 The website documents a summit meeting held in June, 2011, convened by the Internet Archive, Sloan Foundation and National Endownment for the Humanities, and a blog continues to document additional LOD-LAM sessions (Washington, London, New Zealand&#8230;).\u00a0 A <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/group\/lod-lam\">Google Group<\/a> open to anyone, and additional presentations and &#8220;summits&#8221; continue, led by Jon Voss (@jonvoss).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2001\/sw\/\">W3C Semantic Activity\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/lita\/involve\/igs\/linked\/lit-iglld\">ALCTS\/LITA Library Linked Data Interest Group.<\/a>\u00a0 This is an ALA Connect site; some content should not require a login to see, but anyone (including non-ALA members) can create a login for ALA Connect.\u00a0 Right now there&#8217;s not much there; I&#8217;ll activate the link when the meeting notes and resource pages are up.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/igelu.org\/special-interests\/lod\">IGELU (International Ex Libris Users Group) Linked Open Data SWIG.<\/a>\u00a0 Group formed in 2011 with goal to&#8221;achieve essential linked open data features, as well as enhanced data-services functionality and APIs, in all Ex Libris products where appropriate, both from the data publishing and from the data consuming perspective. In practice this means focusing only on next generation products and platforms: URDD\/Primo and URM\/Alma. Existing API\u2019s, such as X-Server for Aleph, Metalib, SFX and RESTful APIs can also be considered.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/planetrdf.com\/\">Planet RDF<\/a> is a group blog (aggregation of blogs) focused on semantic web\/linked data generally<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/semanticweb.com\/\">semanticweb.com<\/a> is geared toward the business community; it publishes a newsletter, blog-like site, and information about events such as the SemTech conference.\u00a0 Interesting place to get the business perspective.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lotico.com\/index.php\/Lotico\">Lotico<\/a> is a wiki space for a community of Semantic Web enthusiasts. It showcases events and &#8220;meetups&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.semanticfocus.com\/blog\/entry\/title\/60-semantic-web-blogs-list\/\">60+ Semantic Web Blogs list<\/a> &#8211; A blog post from 4 years ago, lists blogs that are all or partially about linked data<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mkbergman.com\/\">AI3::Adaptive Information<\/a> &#8211; Mike Bergman of Structured Dynamics has a blog and website primarily devoted to Semantic Web\/Linked Data.\u00a0 This includes the &#8220;Sweet Tools&#8221; list of over 1,000 semantic web tools, and the SweetPedia, a sporadically updated compilation of semantic technology research articles focusing on Wikipedia\/DBPedia.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lamsmetadata.blogspot.com\/\">LAMs Metadata<\/a>, blog created to fuel a workshop at DLF Fall Forum 2011 (November, Baltimore) &#8211; \u201cMoving Forward: Examining the Needs to Re-tool the LAMs Data.\u201d\u00a0 Includes notes from that meeting.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a id=\"Information\">Information, reports, &#8220;webliographies,&#8221; other resources<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2005\/Incubator\/lld\/\">W3C Library Linked Data Incubator Group<\/a> was an official W3C activity.\u00a0 The group concluded its work and published its Final Report, Use Cases and other material in October.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/semanticweb.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">semanticweb.org<\/a> is a community wiki site (using Semantic MediaWiki) with a large community that contribute <a href=\"http:\/\/semanticweb.org\/wiki\/Tools\">Tools<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/semanticweb.org\/wiki\/Events\">Events<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/semanticweb.org\/wiki\/Ontology\">Ontologies<\/a> to a growing list.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clir.org\/pubs\/reports\/pub152\/LDWTechDraft_ver1.0final_111230.pdf\">Stanford Linked Data Workshop Technology Plan<\/a> is a plan for a &#8220;multi-national, multi-institutional discovery environment built on Linked Open Data principles&#8221; for academic resource discovery.\u00a0 It follows from a workshop conducted at Stanford University June 27-July 1 2011 with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation&#8217;s Scholarly Communications Program, CLIR and Stanford University Libraries.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dublincore.org\/documents\/dc-rdf\/\">Expressing Dublin Core metadata using the Resource Description Framework (RDF)<\/a> explains a linked data approach to using Dublin Core elements as properties, based on the <a href=\"http:\/\/dublincore.org\/documents\/abstract-model\/\">Dublin Core Abstract Model<\/a>, and incorporating classes, vocabulary schemes, data types and other aspects.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/journals.tdl.org\/jodi\/article\/view\/1814\/1769\">Archival Description in OAI-ORE<\/a>; article by Deborah Kaplan, Anne Sauer and Eliot Wilczek of Tufts University (Journal of Digital Information, Vol 12, No 2 (2011) about the potential of expressing the data in archival EAD finding aids using the RDF-based OAI-ORE standard (Object Reuse and Exchange) and how this would enable linking and re-aggregation of resources across datastores.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/alapublishing.webex.com\/alapublishing\/lsr.php?AT=pb&amp;SP=EC&amp;rID=5519872&amp;rKey=747359f5ad28e543\">Karen Coyle webinar:\u00a0 Libraries and Linkded Data: Looking to the Future on July 19, 2012.\u00a0 Recording<\/a> is available, also a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alatechsource.org\/blog\/2012\/07\/continuing-the-conversation-libraries-and-linked-data-looking-to-the-future.html%20\">follow-up blog post<\/a>, which contains Karen&#8217;s slides and a link to her site, which contains a boatload of additional resources.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a id=\"Data\">Data sources<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/thedatahub.org\/\">The Data Hub <\/a>is a searchable database (using the CKAN application) of mostly openly available datasets &#8211; including Linked Data sets.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/sindice.com\/\">Sindice<\/a> the Semantic Web Index, allows query of an ever growing collection of triples\/data sets by term, property, Sparql query, and other means and includes other tools and a cool &#8220;Latest data&#8221;
