{"id":136,"date":"2012-03-30T10:47:15","date_gmt":"2012-03-30T14:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.emory.edu\/emoryfacultycouncil\/?p=136"},"modified":"2014-11-06T18:36:08","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T18:36:08","slug":"gray-book-undergoing-updates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/councilconcerns\/2012\/03\/30\/gray-book-undergoing-updates\/","title":{"rendered":"Gray Book Undergoing Updates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Claire Sterk spoke with the Council about the process of updating the \u201cGray Book,\u201d the statement of principles governing faculty relationships with the university. \u201cExcept for some minor revisions, we have not substantially revised our Gray Book since 1998,\u201d Sterk said, noting that most of the proposed changes would bring the book into alignment with current practice. \u201cMoving forward the Gray Book will also become a \u2018living\u2019 or virtual document,\u201d she added. Aside from minor editorial updates, the proposed changes aim to<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>clarify questions of how limited faculty appointments are made,<\/li>\n<li>simplify the plethora of titles currently used around the university for non-ten- ure track faculty, and<\/li>\n<li>clarify the meanings of \u201cretirement\u201d and the \u201cemeritus\u201d title.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sterk requested a Council endorsement of the proposed changes, after which they would be reviewed by the Council of Deans, President\u2019s Cabinet, and Board of Trustees.
