Canvas Release Highlights for July 2024

Several new features are included in the product release on Saturday, July 20, 2024. Here are our highlights.

The Discussions / Announcements Redesign is enabled in all courses as of July 20, 2024. New features exclusive to the Discussions Redesign include a split screen layout for replies to replies (the classic “inline” layout for replies is also available), the ability for teachers to view the edit history for student replies, and the ability to mention people in replies with the ‘at’ symbol. Instructure is also developing a “Checkpoints” feature (to be released later in 2024) that will allow teachers to set different due dates and points possible for the initial post and required follow-up replies.

Teachers & TAs can now assign Modules & Pages to specific sections or students. In connection with the new feature, they will see a new Assign To button in Assignment Details & Discussions options pages. Clicking Assign To or Manage Assign To will open a sidebar menu.

All users can set up out of office responses & signatures in the Inbox / Messages / Conversations tool. Click the settings wheel icon in the top right corner of the inbox to set these options. We enabled these new features Tuesday, July 23, 2024.

The course status is displayed on the Home page and Settings page as Published or Unpublished with a dropdown chevron. Teachers can click the status to open the dropdown menu. This interface update is part of the July 17, 2024 code deploy.
