{"id":2763,"date":"2020-04-29T14:59:52","date_gmt":"2020-04-29T18:59:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/?p=2763"},"modified":"2020-06-10T15:09:09","modified_gmt":"2020-06-10T19:09:09","slug":"emory-libraries-releases-framing-shadows-as-online-exhibit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/emory-libraries-releases-framing-shadows-as-online-exhibit\/","title":{"rendered":"Emory Libraries Releases &#8220;Framing Shadows&#8221; as Online Exhibit, Aided by ECDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We are excited to announce that &#8220;Framing Shadows,&#8221; a physical library exhibit <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/framing-shadows-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously featured on the ECDS blog<\/a> upon its opening in February 2019, has now launched as <a href=\"http:\/\/exhibits.libraries.emory.edu\/framing-shadows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an online exhibition<\/a> thanks to the efforts of Emory Libraries and <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalscholarship.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emory Center for Digital Scholarship<\/a> (ECDS). \u201cFraming Shadows\u201d supplies a counter-narrative that challenges the pervasive \u201cmammy\u201d stereotype (an archetype of a black woman who worked as a nanny to a white family) and encourages viewers to consider nuanced perspectives. With help from ECDS staff, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carolinecorbitt.com\/about-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caroline Corbitt<\/a> (Exhibitions Graphic Designer for Emory Libraries) has worked with the exhibit&#8217;s curator Dr. Kimberly Wallace-Sanders to ensure a viewing experience that invokes the same provocative message as the physical exhibit: &#8220;the more you look the more you see.\u201d The online exhibit also takes visitors to additional resources that can be found elsewhere online and in-person in the Rose Library, and is available at the following link:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Framing Shadows: <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/exhibits.libraries.emory.edu\/framing-shadows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>exhibits.libraries.emory.edu\/framing-shadows<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2791\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/04\/framingshadowstitleimage01-844x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/04\/framingshadowstitleimage01-844x1024.jpg 844w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/04\/framingshadowstitleimage01-247x300.jpg 247w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/04\/framingshadowstitleimage01-768x932.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/04\/framingshadowstitleimage01-371x450.jpg 371w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/04\/framingshadowstitleimage01-350x425.jpg 350w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/04\/framingshadowstitleimage01.jpg 989w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/>\u201cFraming Shadows: Portraits of Nannies from the Robert Langmuir African American Photograph Collection&#8221; was curated by <a href=\"http:\/\/aas.emory.edu\/home\/people\/faculty\/sanders-kimberly-wallace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kimberly Wallace-Sanders<\/a>, Associate Professor of American and African American Studies at Emory University. The exhibit features portraits of nannies from the <a href=\"http:\/\/rose.library.emory.edu\/collections\/african-american-history-culture\/langmuir.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Langmuir African American Photograph Collection<\/a>, housed in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rose.library.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library<\/a>, along with other literary and visual materials. The physical exhibit originally displayed in Woodruff Library\u2019s Level 3 rotunda and corridor is currently at Oxford Library and will remain there through the Fall 2020 semester. Kimberly Wallace-Sanders led a program with students in Spring 2020 and will lead a larger program for the campus in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>Because of a desire to make the well-received exhibit more accessible and work already completed on an online version by Adam Newman (ECDS, Digital Project Specialist for Atlanta Initiatives), &#8220;Framing Shadows&#8221; was selected to be the first Emory Libraries online exhibit project in WordPress. Instead of merely duplicating the physical layout of the exhibit, the project team focused on the message of the exhibition&#8217;s images, which according to Wallace-Sanders captured a \u201cmicrocosm of power dynamics involving race, gender, class, status, age, and domestic labor relations.&#8221; Caroline Corbitt has worked to allow the viewer the same experience with the nanny portraits in order to invoke important questions raised by Kimberly in the original display. Chase Lovellette (Systems Lead for the ECDS) and Dr. Kayla Shipp (Digital Scholarship Specialist for the ECDS) consulted on setup, training, and layout for the Framing Shadows online exhibit.
