{"id":4061,"date":"2020-09-14T11:31:49","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T15:31:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/?p=4061"},"modified":"2020-09-14T11:31:49","modified_gmt":"2020-09-14T15:31:49","slug":"digital-tour-initiative-applications-fall-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/digital-tour-initiative-applications-fall-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Fall 2020 Grant Applications for the Digital Tour Initiative due September 30"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/ecds.emory.edu\/\">Emory Center for Digital Scholarship<\/a> (ECDS) continues to support the <strong>Digital Tour Initiative<\/strong>\u00a0in partnership with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiahumanities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Georgia Humanities<\/a> (the Georgia state affiliate of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a>), an initiative that began in 2019. Georgia-based nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply for grants of <strong>up to $2500<\/strong> (raised from the previous amount of $2000) to support humanities programs. Programs must involve at least one humanities scholar, bring the public together for discussion and exchange, and be designed for and open to public audience(s). The Digital Tour Initiative grant allows organizations to create walking and driving tour mobile apps through the ECDS open source web-based platform <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalscholarship.emory.edu\/projects\/software\/open-tour.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenTour Builder<\/a>, with technical support provided by ECDS.\u00a0<strong>Applications for the Fall 2020 cycle of Digital Tour Initiative grants are due on September 30 at 11:30pm EDT.<\/strong> The application details are available <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiahumanities.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/2021-digital-tour-initiative-guidelines_final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/strong> (PDF).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Apply on the Georgia Humanities grants page: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgiahumanities.org\/grants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.georgiahumanities.org\/grants\/<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What is OpenTour Builder?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/opentour.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenTour Builder<\/a> is a software platform that allows tour builders to easily create interactive, attractive tours that guide users from stop to stop using their smartphone&#8217;s GPS and OpenTour Builder&#8217;s native Google Maps instructions. At each location, the designer can include images, video, text, and external links to provide historical and cultural context, tying that information to the physical space.<\/p>\n<p>The ECDS launched a new version of OpenTour in early 2019 that provided new functions to make tours clear on laptops and desktops in addition to mobile optimization. (You can read more about those OpenTour updates and details in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/opentour-builder-launch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ECDS blog post from March 2019<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3>What do the tours look like?<\/h3>\n<p>For examples, see the <a href=\"https:\/\/opentour.emory.edu\/georgia-humanities\/augusta-s-golden-blocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Augusta\u2019s Golden Blocks tour<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/opentour.emory.edu\/georgia-humanities\/walking-tour-of-cartersville-s-african-american-business-district-1870-1940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walking Tour of Cartersville\u2019s African American Business District: 1870\u20131940<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/opentour.emory.edu\/georgia-humanities\/buried-history-savannah-s-african-american-legacy-driving-tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buried History: Savannah\u2019s African American Legacy tour<\/a>. Be sure to check the <strong>Digital Tour Initiative<\/strong> box on the grant application.
