{"id":4182,"date":"2020-10-05T15:57:51","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T19:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/?p=4182"},"modified":"2020-10-20T14:15:09","modified_gmt":"2020-10-20T18:15:09","slug":"open-access-week-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/open-access-week-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"Save the Date: International Open Access Week 2020, October 19-25"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openaccessweek.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>International Open Access Week<\/strong><\/a> is an advocacy event organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sparcopen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition<\/a> (SPARC), which is working across the globe with governments, higher education institutions, and researchers to increase knowledge of, engagement with, and participation in open access (OA), defined as &#8220;the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment.&#8221; The two primary vehicles for open access scholarship have been OA journals and OA archives or repositories, and open access also now includes monographs, textbooks, and other forms of scholarly output.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open Access at Emory: <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/openaccess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/openaccess\/<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Emory University faculty passed the <a href=\"http:\/\/sco.library.emory.edu\/open-access-publishing\/emory-repositories\/emory-oa-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emory Open Access Policy<\/a> in 2011; shortly thereafter, Emory&#8217;s Scholarly Communications Office began sharing faculty scholarship in <a href=\"https:\/\/open.library.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenEmory<\/a>, which preserves Emory faculty works and makes them freely accessible, furthering the visibility of the intellectual community here at Emory. Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion.\" width=\"245\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/09\/2020-OAW-01-Poster-Legal-IMAGE-622x1024.png 622w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/09\/2020-OAW-01-Poster-Legal-IMAGE-182x300.png 182w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/09\/2020-OAW-01-Poster-Legal-IMAGE-768x1265.png 768w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/09\/2020-OAW-01-Poster-Legal-IMAGE-933x1536.png 933w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/ecds\/files\/2020\/09\/2020-OAW-01-Poster-Legal-IMAGE-1243x2048.png 1243w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><\/a>Co-sponsors of Open Access Week 2020 at Emory include: the <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalscholarship.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emory Center for Digital Scholarship<\/a> (ECDS), which supports several open access journals and projects; the <a href=\"http:\/\/fchi.emory.edu\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry<\/a> (FCHI), which supports the Mellon-funded <a href=\"http:\/\/fchi.emory.edu\/digitalpublishing\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Publishing in the Humanities<\/a> (DPH) initiative; the <a href=\"https:\/\/cfde.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Center for Faculty Development and Excellence<\/a> (CFDE), which supports Emory faculty authors, including those who wish to publish their works open access; and Emory Libraries, which supports Emory&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/sco.library.emory.edu\/open-access-publishing\/oa-funding-support\/emory-oa-fund.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Access Publishing Fund<\/a> (administered by the Libraries&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sco.library.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scholarly Communications Office<\/a>) and the recently launched <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.library.emory.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emory Digital Collections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since an in-person reception is not possible this year (details about past receptions are available <a href=\"http:\/\/fchi.emory.edu\/digitalpublishing\/news-events\/authors-reception.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on the DPH website<\/a>), ECDS&#8217;s Digital Project Specialist Dr. Kayla Shipp has developed <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/openaccess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a website<\/a> to virtually celebrate International Open Access Week at Emory. Our hope is to update it year-round to serve as a hub for information about Emory&#8217;s many open access initiatives.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open Access at Emory: <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/openaccess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/openaccess\/<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The website features the following content and more:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Video recordings of conversations between OA book authors at Emory University and experts working in related fields outside the traditional academy. Funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/mellon.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew W. Mellon Foundation<\/a> enabled these books to be published OA as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.openmonographs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TOME<\/a> (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem) initiative, a collaboration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aau.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association of American Universities<\/a> (AAU), the <a href=\"https:\/\/aupresses.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association of University Presses<\/a> (AUPresses), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association of Research Libraries<\/a> (ARL).<\/li>\n<li>Information regarding approximately 50 OA journal articles published with the financial assistance of Emory Libraries\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/sco.library.emory.edu\/open-access-publishing\/oa-funding-support\/emory-oa-fund.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Access Publishing Fund<\/a>.
