Titled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/made-by-history\/2023\/03\/28\/desantis-wokeism-racism-marginalized\/\">Florida\u2019s past paints Ron DeSantis\u2019s war on \u2018wokeism\u2019 in a dark light<\/a>,&#8221; Anderson&#8217;s article discusses the endemic anti-Black violence and political disenfranchisement that characterized Florida society in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Anderson links this history to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019s war on &#8216;wokeism,&#8217; often minimized as a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/florida-politics\/2023\/03\/03\/desantis-takes-his-culture-war-texas-gov-greg-abbotts-turf\/\" target=\"_blank\">culture war<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/31\/us\/governor-desantis-higher-education-chris-rufo.html\" target=\"_blank\">taking on the establishment<\/a>\u00a0to build his conservative brand, is actually a war on the marginalized. Sensing that they don\u2019t have the power to fight back, he tramples the Constitution,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/02\/10\/1155806778\/desantis-florida-republicans-migrant-transport-millions\" target=\"_blank\">state law<\/a>\u00a0or whatever gets in his way. The targeting is clear. DeSantis\u2019s own attorney defined  &#8216;woke&#8217; as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/what-does-woke-mean-gov-desantis-officials-answer-during-andrew-warren-trial\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;the belief there are systemic injustices<\/a>\u00a0in American society and the need to address them&#8217;<br><br>&#8220;By\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/what-does-woke-mean-gov-desantis-officials-answer-during-andrew-warren-trial\" target=\"_blank\">denying the existence of systemic injustice<\/a>, DeSantis is placing himself in a long, sordid Florida history that has targeted the civil rights of African Americans in the Sunshine State.
