Congratulations to Matt Miller (University Libraries) on winning one of the 2013 ARSC Awards for Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research, announced January 16 by the Association for Recorded Sound Collections.

In the category “Best Research in Recorded Blues, Gospel, Rhythm & Blues, or Soul Music,” Matt has been awarded a Certificate of Merit for his book Bounce: Rap Music and Local Identity in New Orleans.  The Libraries hold the book in electronic and print form.

In the Amazon.com book overview, they said, “Popular music scholar and filmmaker Matt Miller explores the ways in which participants in New Orleans’ hip-hop scene have collectively established, contested, and revised a distinctive style of rap that exists at the intersection of deeply rooted vernacular music traditions and the modern, globalized economy of commercial popular music.”
