qián   rén     zāi    shù ,

前   人   栽   树，

如果前面的人种树 

The former generation plants the trees,

 

hòu     rén   chéng  liáng;

后   人   乘   凉; 

后面的人就可以享受树荫；

The later generation rests in the shades.

前   人   伐   树，

如果前面的人把树都砍掉， 

The former generation logs,

 

hòu    rén    zāo    yāng.

后   人   遭   殃。

后面的人就惨了。

The later generation suffers.

qǔ     zhī     yǒu     dù ,

取   之   有   度，   

如果适当地索取，

If (sources are) taken properly,

 

yòng    zhī    yǒu     jié ,

用   之   有   节，

有节制地使用，

And used moderately,

 

zé     cháng  zú

则   常   足。

就会保证常常富足。

Affluence will be guaranteed.
