He Zhizhang – Yongliu

 Translation:

That tall willow seems to have used emerald green jade to decorate itself. Its thousand branches hang like green silk ribbons. Who cut and trimmed its leaves so delicately? I wonder if it was the spring wind of the second lunar month that wielded the scissors.

He Zhizhang, also known as He Ji Zhen, (659-745). This poem describes a willow tree. The first two sentences compare the color of the willow tree to jade and liken the willow branches to green silk ropes. In the third and fourth sentences, the poet uses his imagination to compare the spring wind to a pair of scissors that cut through the delicate willow leaves. This is the highlight of the poem.
