Alongside the River in Qingming is the only surviving painting of Zhang Zeduan.

This painting is so famous because it shows the emperor, the aristocrats, and the commoner’s lifestyle. Many historians think that this painting reveals Kaifeng’s characteristics and the rich and the poor’s life during the Northern Song Dynasty. This painting is also famous because it has accurate depictions of architecture, people, boats, marketplaces, stores, bridges, and scenery. It has more than 550 people with different postures and expressions.

Although this painting shows the life of the rich and the poor, I think if he drew other seasons, it would have shown more hardships of the commoners. Because spring is the best season, summer and winter depictions will show more hardships.
