Jasmine Cohen

This Wen Jia painting is especially meaningful. It incorporates both Daoist symbolism and narrative description. The painting is divided into two halves: The upper part depicts a Daoist Temple surrounded by many dangerous mountains. The lower half depicts a cave and a stream of flowing water. This is a Daoist symbol that represents a pathway to paradise. In the caves there are scholars conversing.  In the center of the painting, there are two travelers walking up stairs looking over a waterfall. First they rest in the pavilions, and then they continue their journey to the Daoist Temple at the top of the mountain.

Wen Jia was born in 1501 in the Ming Dynasty in Wu, Jiangsu province. He is the son of a painter. He followed in his renowned father’s footsteps and also became a poet and a painter. His style of painting is influenced by his father’s, in terms of brushwork, composition, arrangement and subject matter. I chose this painting because it relaxes me and encourages me to appreciate nature. I can feel the peaceful ambiance.

If I were in the painting, I would be standing on the bridge, drinking Chai tea, listening to the flowing waterfall. I would talk to the travelers and discuss their trip to learn about the importance of Daoism. This painting emphasizes the Daoist principle of inner relaxation.
