A Short Ethnographic Theater Piece on Life during COVID-19<\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduction:<\/strong>
<\/span>I\u2019ve recollected some of my experiences in Atlanta, my friends\u2019 experiences from Washington DC, the Bay area, Michigan, New York, and other states of racist\/xenophobic attacks or comments from strangers as well as people that I know, who are Korean, attacking the Chinese for the virus.
<\/span><\/i>This short script was produced for ANT\/THEA 377W “Fieldwork into Performance,” taught by Prof. Debra Vidali in Spring 2020<\/span>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Stranger 1:<\/strong>
<\/span><\/i>Hey you! Yeah, you over there, the Asian, this is all your fault!<\/span><\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong>
Silent<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Stranger 2:<\/strong>
<\/span><\/i>Why aren\u2019t you wearing a mask? What is wrong with you?<\/span><\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong>
Silent<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

At Home<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Family member 1 (Korean):<\/strong>
<\/span><\/i>Why did the Chinese start eating bats? This is all their fault! They deserve to die!<\/span><\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong>
Silent<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

On the Road<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Stranger 3:<\/strong> (gives hand gesture towards me to roll down the window on the road)
<\/span><\/i>Roll down your window. Go back to your country and catch the virus! Stop spreading it to us!<\/span><\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong>
Silent<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

At a Restaurant<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong>
<\/span><\/i>Can I have a seat for two please?<\/span><\/p>\n

Waiter at restaurant:<\/strong>
<\/span><\/i>No. There are no seats here.<\/span><\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong>
<\/span><\/i>I can see that your restaurant is empty.<\/span><\/p>\n

Waiter at restaurant:<\/strong>
<\/span><\/i>Sorry, you guys are a safety hazard, especially during this time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Me:<\/strong>
