{"id":941,"date":"2016-05-06T19:23:25","date_gmt":"2016-05-06T19:23:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/gbsl\/?p=941"},"modified":"2016-05-06T19:23:49","modified_gmt":"2016-05-06T19:23:49","slug":"nidia-banuelos-article","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/gbsl\/nidia-banuelos-article\/","title":{"rendered":"Woodruff Library Visiting Librarian Nidia Banuelos Publishes Article on History of Business Education in Journal of Higher Ed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>This article was <a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/lits\/2016\/05\/06\/nidia-banuelos-gets-published\/\" target=\"_blank\">originally published in the LITS Online News on May 6, 2016<\/a> and is written by Wade Moricle.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_943\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/gbsl\/files\/2016\/05\/new-nidia.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-943\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-943\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-943\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/gbsl\/files\/2016\/05\/new-nidia-300x240.png\" alt=\"Nidia Banuelas is the current Visiting Social Sciences Librarian at Woodruff Library.\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/gbsl\/files\/2016\/05\/new-nidia-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/gbsl\/files\/2016\/05\/new-nidia.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nidia Banuelas is the current Visiting Social Sciences Librarian at Woodruff Library.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Nidia Banuelos<\/strong>, the current visiting social sciences librarian, has an article entitled \u201cFrom Commercial Schools to Corporate Universities: Explaining the Shift in Proprietary Business Education in the U.S., 1970-1990,\u201d that will be published in the July \/ August issue of <em>The Journal of Higher Education<\/em>, as well as\u00a0a slightly early online release in May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">According to Emily Taylor, publisher of the\u00a0<em>Journal<\/em>, \u201cWe thought you would like to know about this excellent research publication on a timely topic, as scrutiny of for-profit universities is an important current topic in higher education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The article discusses the access to\u00a0MBA degrees from various levels of learning institution. with a\u00a0big key being\u00a0the flexibility of part-time programs, especially for women who are balancing life and school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nidia\u00a0was surprised that in her\u00a0research, for-profit schools are relatively new to offering an\u00a0MBA,\u00a0yet now these programs have become some of their most profitable, signaling an understanding of the need for flexible scheduling in\u00a0higher\u00a0education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">According Nidia\u2019s\u00a0article abstract found at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiostatepress.org\/index.htm?journals\/jhe\/jheabstracts.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><em>JHE<\/em> website<\/a>, \u201cThis study uses archival sources to examine the factors that encouraged for-profit business education to shift during the 1970s from small, certificate programs for bookkeepers and secretaries to large, multi-site universities for mid-level managers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cUsing data from the Occupational Outlook Handbook, as well as trend data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, I show that demand for the MBA began increasing dramatically during the 1970s. This increase alone, however, does not explain why new, low-status for-profit institutions managed to survive in the mature and highly competitive field of business education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cI also show that demand for this degree increased among (a) women of child rearing age and (b) mid-career working adults\u2014two populations traditionally underserved by the non-profit university. For-profit schools were able to grow quite large by directing their marketing at these populations and offering an MBA that promised to be accessible, convenient, and practically oriented. While others have pointed to changes in political support for for-profit universities\u2014especially more access to aid for students\u2014to explain their growth, here I show that students had strong motivators for using federal funding at for-profits in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This article was originally published in the LITS Online News on May 6, 2016 and is written by Wade Moricle.
