Across Emory’s departments, graduate scholars are developing cutting-edge dissertation projects that push the boundaries of knowledge. This work comes with many challenges, especially for students whose projects require them to travel abroad.
The Halle Institute for Global Research and Learning is proud to support doctoral students undertaking global research. Our Graduate Global Fellows program provides funding for a one- to three-month research trip outside the United States for PhD students in the middle of their graduate careers.

In 2024, we supported thirteen students representing eight departments from the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Health Sciences (twelve from the Laney Graduate School and one from the Rollins School of Public Health).
Getting the opportunity to explore local archives and excavation sites, connect with interlocutors and community partners, and build relationships on the ground enables a new generation of scholars to determine the feasibility of their PhD dissertation project before applying for nationally or internationally competitive external funding.
The Halle Institute offers crucial funding at a time when national and international foundations and governments scale back opportunities. International students who are ineligible to apply for major U.S. programs like the Fulbright are especially facing challenges in reaching their fieldwork locations abroad. The Halle Global Fellows program is designed to address these challenges by providing funding and training.
Training for Finding and Winning Grants
The Halle Global Fellows program also offers important professional development support for our awardees. Over the course of one year, students participate in a series of workshops in which they learn to prepare for international data collection, find funding opportunities, and craft successful grant applications. More than three dozen students have participated in these seminars so far, and the resounding feedback we receive is just how much they need and appreciate the grant writing training. Scaffolded exercises and hands-on peer review sessions allow students to develop and refine their arguments for interdisciplinary audiences. Past Halle fellows went on to win nationally competitive grants like the Fulbright, Wenner-Grenn, and ACLS Mellon Innovation fellowships.
