  2. After listening to the class discussion, I found it interesting how there are several significant differences as well as similarities between theater and performance art. For example, both use live art and stages of many sorts, and many times the stage includes a picture being painted in the minds of the spectators. One main difference I would like to discuss is how Performance Art often uses the body as the stage (one example is “arte basura”). Also, performance art uses incorporation, interruption, and intervention to portray the work of art. In Skinner’s video on Performance Art, I was shocked to see that people would go to such severe circumstances, such as Yves Klein throwing himself off a building, to portray a work of art. Some new words I learned this week include (fluxx, happening, and limitless possibilities).

  5. This week, after learning about performance art, I would say that the biggest difference between performance art and theatre is the idea of the “fourth wall” (la cuarta pared). Performance art utilizes its audience members and makes them part of the exhibit or installation (therefore breaking the fourth wall); but, in a movie, the audience members simply sit in front of a screen never interacting with the actors or actresses, which reinstates this idea of separateness and isolation of the artist. That being said, both movies and performance art are trying to convey a message through their form of expression. Most times, there is a greater meaning behind the scenes in a movie, though it is not always obvious in the moment. Most performance art utilizes “the body as a medium” (PBS) and usually takes more of an extreme, direct approach in conveying a message, such as when Yoko Ono allowed her audience to cut off her clothing during a fluxus piece in order to describe the treatment of women in society. Another kind of performance art which stood out to me is when people participate in earth art, in which they incorporate themselves into nature, making the earth the audience of their work.

  6. At the beginning of the week, I certainly did not understand the difference between theater and performance art. Defining these concepts is very new to me, but I think after discussing it in class and after trying to understand the readings, I understand a little more about what makes these art forms similar and different. Performance art, on the one hand, is much newer than theater, so where much of theater still relies on and expresses ideas from older times, such as “peasant plays”, or Shakespearean plays that touch on ideas that have been around for a long time, performance art often focuses more on more modern issues, such as an installation of letting people cut off a woman’s clothes, to conveyed a message about how women in society are treated. Another difference between the two is the idea of “the fourth wall”, and cutting it down during a performance art piece to let the audience in. I think this can also be thought of as a similarity too though, because just as performance art is displayed to illicit a reaction out of those viewing it, so is theater. Theater is written and performed so that people will think about it, take it with them when they leave the theater, and incorporate its message into their daily lives. After listening to the discussions this week, I still have a lot of questions. I still don’t completely understand the fourth wall, what it really means for the audience to become a part of the art. However, though I still struggle to reach the deeper meaning and content of some of the performance art pieces we have looked at, I am excited to learn more about what performance art really means, and how the message it conveys differs from theater.

  7. Upon entering this class, I did not think much of the difference between Performance Art and theater; both are live spectacles and can convey any number of messages depending on the script and plot. However, it is now clear that there may be more that separates than unites the two. Primarily, Performance Art completely disregards the fourth wall and enters into a world of instability unlike theater. Performance Art challenges and engages its spectators and surroundings, while theater is altogether a much more constant art form. For example, the Performance “Cruci/Fiction” on the Mexican-United States border proves that audiences assume an expectation of inaction according to “theatrical conventions (Taylor 77).” As a result of this communal understanding of theater, regardless of the instructions available to rescue the performers, the performers faint. This is just one example of Performance Art’s difference from theater. As Diana Taylor argues, “performance changes constantly, depending on actors, context, and audience (Taylor 204).” This is the defining difference between theater and Performance Art in my opinion.

Para concluir en las palabras de Taylor, “What’s interesting about performance studies, I believe, is not so much what it ‘is’ but what it enables us to do”, en las misma manera que mis estudios de performance art provocaron que pienso mas sobre los manifestaciones del art en mi propia vida.

  11. Me miraba una pelicula sobre una mujer que “pranked” su novio by hiding a camera and then pretending to be dead so that she could record his reaction. Si Performance Art (con el termino “fluxus”) puede ser cualquier cosa que sea una decision consciente, y el Performance Art tambien usa el cuerpo como la escena, was her performance theatrical or a performance art? We discussed that there is no performance art without conflict because the performance is trying to mobilizes one to intervene– be it oneself, nature, or the observer. In that sense, me parece que su “prank” era un Performance Art porque sus acciones consciente provocaba una reaccion del novio. Pero nosotros, as the audience who watched this scene unravel, puede take on the roll of la audiencia de un teatro, not a viewer of a cine. My understanding of the difference between el cine y el teatro es que el cine manipula la informacion que ve la audiencia. En este caso, the viewer sees one straight scene, with no editing or switching or angles. But in the case that the viewing of this prank was more theatrical than cinematic, and I would qualify the protagonists’ actions as a performance, my question is then whether or not el teatro y el Performance Art can be interchangeable or co-exist.

  13. Theater and Performance Art are similar in many aspects as both involve the performer and the audience/public/spectators in the same room, unlike films. They are both a form of live art – a live performance. Both are a form of performance that can communicate a message. However, there are even more differences that we learned about than I imagined. The most important difference is the idea of spectators vs. spect-actors. There exists a “fourth wall” n theater that separates the performers on stage from the audience/public, limiting their roles to just spectators, having no part in the form of art. However, in performance art, the public becomes a part of the masterpiece. They become “spect-actors.” It’s more of an interaction with the public than just a performance to them. There is no clear separation between the actors and the spectators as there is in theater. In addition, in performance art, the body is used as a stage for their art/performance. They turn their body into a part of the art or part of the message/expression they are trying to communicate, such as the idea of body art and earth art. One woman even used her body as a sort of canvas, allowing people to either touch her in a pleasing or painful way. In performance art, there is more intervention and cooperation, and there is much more involvement of the body than I ever imagined, to such an extent where it can be harmful to these artists or dangerously fatal. This shows the extent to which they will go to communicate their beliefs and expressions and shows the large difference in theater and performance art.

Diana Taylor dice: “Performance studies, I believe, is postdisciplinary in the sense that it resists becoming a discipline with definable limits; it is forever an “emergent” field (Taylor 200).

  17. In class, we talked a lot about both theater and performance art. In addition to that, I watched the videos and did the readings, and through that, I learned that there were a number of differences between theater and performance art. I found the “Unlock Art: Frank Skinner on Performance Art” video to be intriguing, specifically, the part where he said, “At the heart of performance art is a strong social critique.” Based on what I understand about performance art, this definition truly encompasses the role performance art plays in helping audiences think about certain topics. In the video he further talks about the concept fluxus, which we also talked about in class. In class we talked about the idea that fluxus means happening and that if one does something consciously it can be considered performance art. In the video, Frank Skinner talks about the idea that each and every human can be an artist. Performance art differs from theater in the way that it includes the audience. Additionally, performance art appeals to all the different emotions. I think performance art is very unique form of art that truly allows the audience to be a part of the performance and to think deeply about critical topics in a way that they might otherwise not.

  18. Performance art and theater contain many elements such as the use of the body and the audience. Performance art is more interactive where the idea of spectators vs. spect-actors comes into play. The actors insist on engaging with the public such that the “fourth wall” is broken. The “fourth wall”, in theater, creates a separation between the performers on stage and the audience. However, in performance art, the “fourth wall” is broken thus allowing the audience to become “spect-actors”. In performance art, another crucial element is the body. The stage is the body while in theater there is a stage in which the bodies are placed. The body is turned into part of the art which allows for performance art to become an interruption of the daily life. Performance art is about intervention and the artists intervene in the daily life by communicating their ideas by installing their performance on a stage that most do not expect: the human body.
