“All That Heaven Allows” explores the relationship between an older woman, Cary, and a younger man, Ron. Cary explores how her relationship with someone not only of a different age group, but of a lower status in society, impacts her relationships with her children and friends.
I watched a film last year, titled “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul.” The film follows Emmi, an old German widow, who meets a young, Arabian, mechanic named Ali. Their relationship blooms and quickly leads to marriage between the two. The marriage is quickly criticized by family members, coworkers, peers, and society overall. The two explore what love means to them, as well as confronting, racial, age, and class differences.
I believe these films can help viewers understand intersectional relationships and how racism and differences in age, class, ethnicity, etc. can influence relationships. Not only that, but seeing how the people around you are impacted by relationships that go “against” societies view of a heterosexual relationship. I believe “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul,” is an excellent film to watch to understand these concepts and see how internal insecurities and fears clash with external opinions and perspectives, to ultimately strengthen or weaken a relationship.
