In Gravity, the director, Alfonso Cuarón’s use of cinematography and Mise-en-Scene flows exactly with the setting of the movie. This film is made of a multiple long shots when in outer space. This ties in with the setting because it demonstrates the relationship between the small size of humans to the huge amount of space in outer space.
Additionally, the film includes canted framing throughout the film which to portray the effect that space has on objects. Objects in space move freely and that is what we see with the camera movement in the film and how the characters move throughout the film.
In space, the only light source you get comes from the sun. We can observe the edge lighting in scenes. This outlines the character’s body and shape in the film as well as the earths shape. The sun creates an outer ring around the earth to emphasis the roundness of the earth and how big it is. This technique also draws the eye to the characters and their body language.
I also believe that Cuarón used physical space to juxtapose how small Dr. Stone and Matt are to how large space is. This big space of darkness creates a sense of fear in the viewers. The Sun being the only source of light was a cinmeatic decision that was important to include in the film. This choice contributes to Cuarón’s vision of creating the feeling that you are actually in space. The fluidity of the camera movement and characters, the lighting, and framing all create the sensation that as a viewer, we are in space with these characters, feeling some of the stress and pressure they feel in their dire situation.
