Teen Titans Go was universally hated upon its release for causing the early demise of the universally renowned show Teen Titans. Perceived as low-brow, fast-paced, lazy humour compared to the maturity of its predecessor, it took a while for Teen Titans Go to be assessed on its own merit.
Its 100th episode, titled And the Award for Sound Design Goes to Rob, follows what happens to the teen superheroes after Raven makes a deal with a demon to remove all sound.
Watching a regular cartoon episode without sounds makes it all the more jarring to realise places where there would normally be musical stings, such as during scene changes and establishing shots. But also missing are the entirely artificial effects accompanying zaps and magical spells being cast.
Though surprised to learn that most live action sound effects are added in post, including footsteps, I shouldn’t have been as surprised as in animation that is necessarily the case, since the actors aren’t acting out the scenes so there are no natural sound effects being recorded.
