On the same weekend that we all watched Citizen Kane, Drake dropped his new highly anticipated album, For All the Dogs. After finishing the film, I listened to the album a few days later, and honestly, it was pretty boring. In my opinion, all of the songs sounded the same as the hundreds he has already released. But then, as I was listening to “8AM in Charlotte,” a certain line jumped out to me.
“Preachin’ to the dogs ’bout wantin’ more for themselves
It’s weighin’ heavy on my moral scale
Knowin’ they gon’ sell another citizen ‘caine, they think they Orson Welles”
Drake raps about watching his friends throw away their lives to sell cocaine to reach a higher economic and power standing (selling innocence for power and greed), just as how Charles Foster Kane sells his innocence for political and economical power.
So cool! I didn’t notice when I listening.
listened.**
What a neat detail! Also goes to show the lasting impact the film had on pop culture.
