This article explores one of the interesting parts of the movie Nope(Jordan Peele,2022). The exploitation of animals is a common theme throughout the movie, highlighted through the similarities between each animal. Each animal in the movie- Gordy, Jean Jacket, the horses- is used for monetary gain. Jupe is the main culprit, participating in the Gordy TV show and selling tickets to see Jean Jacket. After being unharmed by Gordy, Jupe develops the idea that he has power over dangerous animals. This is shown when he calls himself “chosen” right before starting his show which ultimately leads to his death. Both Gordy and Jean Jacket harm the people who try to control them. Jupe is kept safe when he respects the animals but is harmed when he develops a god complex. This change in ideals highlights the idea that animals are not meant to be controlled entirely. OJ exemplifies this as the “animal expert” who knows not to aggravate the animals and respects his horses. He even refuses to use his horses as bait which solidifies his position as a character who understands the animals. This leads to his survival even after experiencing situations where he most likely should have died. Gordy and Jean Jacket are essentially one and the same, which adds layers to the themes brought up in the article.
