At the beginning of Paris is Burning, a man expressed that members of the LGBTQ members participate in ball because it’s as high of fame they expect to get, being a queer person in America. In the 90s, there was’t much queer representation in the media, and the only people who celebrated or accepted queer people was queer people themselves.
This made me think of Honey Balenciaga, a young, popular, ballroom artist. I found it refreshing that Honey used to participate in Ballrooms all around New York, and today, she is on tour dancing for Beyonce. I believe that many LGBTQ+ people limit themselves because of their belief that they won’t succeed because of their status in society. Honey proves to be an inspiration to other members of the community. seeing LGBTQ culture of the ballroom and vogueing being celebrated today, is signs of a change in the way LGBTQ people are viewed.
Although the narrative hasn’t entirely shifted today, queer people and their culture are becoming more and more celebrated and accepted in America today. It allows for queer people to be invited and accepted into more spaces, allowing their representation to grow and start shifting towarda a more positive perspective on queer people in America.
