RRR is a cinematic marvel directed by S.S. Rajamouli. The film is well known for its cinematography and mise-en-scene. This action thriller has been lauded for its marvelous action sequences and the use of wilderness to represent pre-independence India. This film includes amazing songs such as Natu-Natu which has won the Oscars. In spite of all of this, audiences wonder, what sets the Narrative of RRR apart from the other action movies that we witness.
The lesser known fact about this movie is that the characters are actually based on real life rebels against the British government. Bheema is actually a telegu rebel who rebelled against the british India in the State of Hyderabad, he was from the Gonda tribe and he believed in the system of non-cooperation. On the other hand, Raju was a rebel from Andhra Pradesh(today) and he started a revolution with the use of violence. Both of them had different techniques and approaches towards a common Goal. In reality, they did not see eye to eye, which makes this film a fantasy of what if they did see eye to eye.
They Film starts with the screen saying ‘Fire’ talking about Raju symbolising rage and anger, and it says ‘Water’ when talking about bheem symbolizing calm and peace. This represents different attitudes of the characters and what sets them apart from each other.
In an interview, S. S. Rajamouli said that he was excited for this film as he wanted to represent what two forces could have done against the British forces if they had united. He further talked about how these characters uniting could mean something about the separation of Hyderabad and Andhra Pradesh. According to me this film expresses a revision of history and a form of a fantasy and expresses political views and insights which can be a little controversial.
Overall, this film is a treat to watch and can be considered as one of the best movies that have come out of Indian Cinema in recent times.
