Here is a video of Snarky Puppy performing “Lingus” in one take. I’m sure some of you have seen this, but if not, this is a band of students and graduates from the University of North Texas – Denton. I thought this video had lots of interesting elements, in terms of arranging for so many musicians. I really like the suspensions that are in the horns around 2:38. Additionally, Cory Henry takes a keyboard solo at 4:18 that just isn’t right. Hope you enjoy!
Check out the use of bebop scale harmonization in Corey Henry’s keyboard solo at 4:45! a great example of the contemporary use of these scales.
This song is dope. I enjoyed the mellow introduction that segued into the more upbeat section. Also, I really admire the production work; the mix has a warm quality, and the instruments fit together like a glove. The keyboard solo was definitely the track’s highlight. The keyboardist was out of this world.
This is an amazing record. The fact that they did it live makes it even more amazing. I find it interesting how Cory Henry manipulates the scales to make them serve his purpose. Also, the drummer and percussionist do a phenomenal job of adding an impressive array of rhythm.
That was awesome. Definitely loved the groove they had going on in the beginning; so chill. All the players were great. The drummer was great in keeping up with all the syncopation all throughout the song and I loved the lick the guitar was playing in some of the parts. But dang, that piano solo by Henry was fire. It was unbelievable how fast his fingers were moving through scales and more scales as well as playing the harmonies on his left hand. That was super boss; glad I was able to listen to such great music.
Great performance! I know its been said, but I’m really digging the bass line.
Also, I like how all the soloists seem to be in their own zone and still play within the group, as they passed things off from one person to the other.
I prefer acoustic pianos, but I think the synth sound really tied everything together with this particular style–plus Cory Henry wouldn’t have been able to do all those bends and scoops with an acoustic.
Snarky Puppy is so outstanding! I talk with my friends about them all the time. They’re constantly giving great examples of just following what sounds good and letting the music just take control. And Cory Henry is a rare talent. In a lot of their videos, even his own fellow musicians are always astounded by what you comes up with. Even better, you can tell he’s enjoying it all the same like everyone else is. Everything about this and most of their performances is very organic. They never try to be something else, but just have a good time jamming and making good music.
While I’m sure most of the performance was preplanned, I though it was interesting to see how all the musicians communicated with each other despite being in different locations of the room. I also thought the mixed tempo section between the drums and keyboard was very interesting.
