Robert Glasper is in my opinion one of the greatest jazz artists of our generation. Over the past ten years he has introduced jazz to new listeners by infusing it with hip-hop, rock, and neo-soul. “Gonna Be Alright” demonstrates Robert Glasper’s versatility and ability to expand upon your typical jazz trio.
I am unsure if I watched the same video that is “posted,” but I did listen to the album version; I thought the vocals and the unobtrusive piano accompaniment were great. I could definitely hear a hip-hop artist sampling the vocals into a song’s chorus.
That was really chill. Glasper really blended of jazz and R&B and I could definitely hear both genres in the track. The vocals and the instrument samples were artfully mixed and the result was a nice, mellow sound that soothed my ear. The piano in the background also helped bring some color into the music with its scalar flourishes and block chords. All in all, a really good song to listen and see how jazz can be seen in different perspectives.
I really liked the video. The background really adds flavor to the overall sound. Very smooth and blended at times with strings and piano, but at other times there was the big band sound with all the brass hits. Seems like good music to have playing in the background since its so chill and non-abrasive. Definitely an interesting take on the genre.
