Running for fire relief

I snapped this great shot of Norman from the back of a moving golf cart!

On May 10, 2014, Norman Hulme (Library External Affairs) took part in the Jack’s Rabbit Run, a 1m/5k race held in Avondale Estates, GA to raise money for a relief fund for a neighborhood family struck tragically by fire. Norman, a long-time resident of Avondale Estates, finished first for his age group.

Jack’s Rabbit Run, named after Jack Willadsen, a 5-year-old severely burned in the fire, featured a 1-mile kids race and a 5K adult race, and attracted over 400 runners from around the area. The run raised nearly $13,000, all of which was donated to the Willadsen family. There are plans to make this race an annual event.

According to Peter Plishka, who was one of the race organizers, “The entire city of Avondale and beyond rallied to support this run with contributions of everything an event like this needs, including set-up and take-down labor, bottled water and refreshments, tents and tables, and much more.”

Children from the neighborhood gathered the day before the race to create a chalk mural on the street in front of the burned house. The race route crossed the mural, which included encouraging words for the runners and the Willadsen family.

I am NOT a runner myself, but I am an Avondale Estates resident so I volunteered to shoot photos of the event.
