Science Commons nearly ready for business

At a recent Library all-hands meeting, Charles Forrest announced that the Science Commons in the new Atwood Chemistry Center is nearly complete. The Science Commons is located in the 4-story atrium that is the centerpiece of the complex.

The Science Commons will feature services and collections expanded beyond chemistry. Scheduled  to open in the fall, the Commons will house collections from a range of scientific areas and feature a full service desk.

Like the recently renovated Learning Commons on the entrance level of the Woodruff Library, the Science Commons is designed to support a “bring your own device” approach to technology, offering comfortable furniture and robust wireless connectivity.

Although the Science Commons has not opened to the public, the Chemistry department held a service awards banquet on April 17 and an undergraduate awards ceremony on April 24.

“It is a beautiful space,” said Ethel Ellington, who received her 25-years-of-service honors at the April 17 event. “We are looking forward to moving into the new addition.”
