Emily loves her modular kayak.

Emily Porter continues her fourth stint working at Emory by becoming the coordinator for the new digital library program. She first came to Emory in 1996 as a serials cataloging specialist in the Woodruff Library, and then moved into an electronic projects specialist position working to develop the Library’s first electronic reserves system.

Emily left Emory to get her master’s of science in Information Design and Technology at Georgia Tech, and stayed to work at Tech’s Institute of Paper Science and Technology. In 2002, Emily returned to Emory’s Goizueta Business Library as their electronic projects librarian, where she did web development and launched a GBS faculty working papers repository system.

After a freelance stint in Santa Cruz, California, Emily came back to Atlanta and to Emory in 2008 as one of the first 8 employees of what was then called the Research & Health Sciences IT group, where her projects included the Electronic Conflict of Interest system and the Emory News Center. In 2013, Emily rejoined the Library as a metadata analyst, and also participated in Emory’s first class of Business Practice Improvement Scholars.

A native of Cincinnati, OH, Emily received a bachelor’s degree in Latin from Georgia State University. She originally came to the area when her dad worked as a professor at Furman University.

When she’s not working, Emily loves travel, with Savannah and Tybee Island being favorite getaways. She also kayaks, usually at Stone Mountain, and loves her modular kayak that breaks into two pieces, allowing her to easily transport it in the back of her car.

“I’m excited to take on my new role,” said Emily, “because it allows me to build on all of my career experiences as we bring a new program and new repository system online.
