Course Reserves adds FLIP lending library

The FLIP reserves were once housed and managed in the old Dobbs University Center.

This summer, Emory’s First-Generation Low Income Partnership (“FLIP”) and the Course Reserves team collaborated on bringing the FLIP lending library to Woodruff Library. This collection was started with the goal of helping first generation and low-income students acquire books for their courses. It is comprised solely of student donations, and available books range across multiple classes from all majors.

Once housed and managed in the old Dobbs University Center, the FLIP lending library was a perfect candidate for inclusion into the Course Reserves collection. Access Services team leader Amy Boucher mediated the partnership, and along with past FLIP co-president Min Young Park (17C) and myself set up the parameters of the program. Over the summer the 400-plus books were walked over from the DUC, items records were created in both Ares and Alma, the books were labeled and added to the reserves shelves in the Heilbrun Music & Media Library.

FLIP students can sign up for access to the library via a Google sign-up page created by reserves assistant Joelle Danz (18C), who is also a FLIP participant. Students who sign up are added to a Course Reserves class where they can view the collection (it is suppressed from view in DiscoverE).
