Melissa Hackman recently started as the new librarian for sociology and development studies in Emory Library’s scholarly communication. In this capacity, she will provide the full range of subject specific library services to Sociology and Development Studies including collection management, consultations, instruction, assessment, and reference.

Melissa has taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz, Brown University, American University, Emory University, and Georgia State University. In addition, she has experience with living and working abroad from serving as a project manager for a qualitative research project in a South African Non-Governmental Organization.

A native of Philadelphia, PA, Melissa holds a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a master of theological studies degree from Harvard University, and a bachelor’s degree in women’s studies from Temple University.

Melissa originally came to Emory as a postdoctoral researcher in women’s studies.

When not working, she loves reading trashy novels, especially about vampires and fairies, and she loves watching Chopped on the Food Network.

“I am excited to work with patrons and to get to know Emory’s library systems,” said Melissa, “Being an anthropologist, I am looking forward to working with the social sciences team. I enjoy the literature and methodologies of social science.”
