The three-and-a-half pound chihuahua had a broken leg that had become gangrenous.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Zuko\u00a0runs around on three good legs and makes everyone happy. He was one of the many dogs who participated in this year&#8217;s\u00a0Woodruff Library Pet Therapy Study Break.<\/p>\n<p>In its fifth year, the Pet Therapy Study Break is organized by the library\u2019s Outreach and Education Team. The purpose is to give Emory students a much-needed break during final exams. According to organizer <strong>Erin Mooney<\/strong>, word of the event has grown. &#8220;Every year we have partnered with Canine Assistants, whose service dogs are\u00a0terrific,&#8221; said Mooney. &#8220;This year, Atlanta Pet Partners heard about the event and wanted to join the fun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.canineassistants.org\" target=\"_blank\">Canine Assistants<\/a> usually trains about 150\u00a0dogs at a time, mainly through the work of volunteers who foster the dogs during their training. A local company, Canine Assistants was founded by Jennifer Arnold as\u00a0a non-profit organization which trains and provides service dogs for children and adults with physical disabilities or other special needs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11081\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/lits\/files\/2016\/12\/dogs1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11081\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11081\" src=\"https:\/\/scholarblogs.emory.edu\/lits\/files\/2016\/12\/dogs1.png\" alt=\"Photo of students petting a dog\" width=\"360\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students relax while petting Dublin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their dogs this year included Dublin, a\u00a0black lab who participates in Canine Readers, a program at Lake Forest Elementary where students read to him.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to adding a second pet therapy organization, the Pet Therapy Study Break&#8217;s\u00a0list of volunteers expanded as well. According to Mooney, &#8220;We had folks throughout the LITS division volunteer and even added some non-LITS Emory employees who wanted to participate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 300 students attended and enjoyed the stress therapy. &#8220;This is the greatest thing ever,&#8221; exclaimed one.\u00a0Zuko was a favorite. &#8220;He&#8217;s a professional snuggler,&#8221;\u00a0said Mallory Holt, Zuko&#8217;s owner and licensed veterinary technician.<\/p>\n<p>Zuko is a member of <a href=\"http:\/\/atlantapetpartners.org\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta\u00a0Pet Partners<\/a>, a national organization that registers all kinds of pets, even\u00a0including guinea pigs, as pet therapy animals. &#8220;They put the pet handlers through a rigorous training course,&#8221; said Holt.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to volunteer next year, reach out to <a href=\"javascript:secureDecryptAndNavigate('XKYS05pZD\/TR7V8CWHSdKK6BHzQk25R3aZP8pIRb+RJ\/+LRwvih+TfxmRMBZuzqnoWlZOPVJ1w+ECi4xR3wfjZQX0mhIlamB', 'f06ce84dc9f38960737bc21900f48c093bed7fe35b4c8a11db8d44734d12ad54')\" target=\"_blank\">Erin Mooney<\/a>.
