The Respect Program in the Office of Health Promotion, in collaboration with the enterprise-wide Intimate Partner Violence Working Group, has been commemorating the month with events culminating in Emory Denim Day on Wednesday, April 22.\u00a0Learn more about the Respect Program, resources for students, and our events at <a href=\"http:\/\/respect.emory.edu\/\">http:\/\/respect.emory.edu<\/a>\u00a0and learn about the Intimate Partner Violence Working Group and resources for staff, faculty, and community members at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/womenscenter.emory.edu\/Programs\/IPVWG\/index.html\">http:\/\/womenscenter.emory.edu\/Programs\/IPVWG\/index.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Denim Day<\/strong>\u00a0is both an awareness event AND a fundraiser. We are grateful for the support of the Emory Student Government Association (SGA),\u00a0<strong>who<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>will donate $1 to the Respect Program<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>for each student, staff, or faculty member photographed wearing jeans\/denim on April 22<sup>nd <\/sup><\/strong>(see below for how to share pics).<\/p>\n<p><strong>#EmoryDenimDay<\/strong>\u00a0is a day of action that originated from a 1992 Italian court case in which the conviction of a rapist was overturned. Because the survivor was wearing tight women\u2019s jeans, the judge ruled that \u201cshe had to help the accused remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer sexual assault but consensual sex.\u201d We stand in solidarity against victim-blaming; sexual assault is\u00a0never\u00a0the survivor\u2019s fault. We can all work together to end sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p>Here are four ways to support #EmoryDenimDay:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Wear jeans\u00a0on Wednesday, April 22.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Stop by our table\u00a0<\/strong>at Wonderful Wednesday to make a sign showing how you support survivors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Take\u00a0pictures\u00a0<\/strong>of you\/your colleagues\/students wearing jeans\u00a0<strong>and share them using the hashtag\u00a0<\/strong><strong>#EmoryDenimDay<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tweet us pics\u00a0<strong>@RespectWell<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>InstaGram us\u00a0<strong>@Respect_Program<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Post photos to \u201c<strong>Emory University Respect Program<\/strong>\u201d Facebook page<\/li>\n<li>Email pictures to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"javascript:secureDecryptAndNavigate('BB3zOrOiZLfy0bSCDkiK9sPAFgCXNLxDTlnlvA473\/xJAsLBlRlWHzcHI3cBVeS4rwbVe0Ze8CsXKEyxebvCT8uECQgDS9BO', 'f06ce84dc9f38960737bc21900f48c093bed7fe35b4c8a11db8d44734d12ad54')\">respect [at] emory [dot] edu<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(let us know if\u00a0you want us to post\u00a0them\u00a0online or not)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Donate<\/strong>\u00a0to support the Respect Program and the Intimate Partner Violence Working Group. This could include a small donation per person for getting to\u00a0wear jeans on a Wednesday. Your donation will benefit awareness campaigns and months of programming, Sexual Assault Peer Advocates (SAPA), Greek Initiative, Emory Active Bystander Skills (ABS), and much more.
