Dr. Marco Tezzele Highlighted in SIAM News for Innovative Ship Hull Optimization Research

Dr. Marco Tezzele was recently featured in SIAM News for his co-authored article “Data-driven Reparameterization for the Structural Optimization of Ship Hulls,” which showcases how scientific computing can improve cruise ship design.
This work presents a novel data-driven parameterization refinement technique that enhances structural optimization by integrating reduced order models with a series of optimization subproblems. The approach enables more efficient exploration of design spaces and has been incorporated into an optimization pipeline currently used by Fincantieri SpA, offering significant computational savings and improved design outcomes compared to traditional methods.
The work is the result of a successful collaboration between Emory University, the mathLab research group at SISSA, and industry partner Fincantieri SpA.
