This is a video of one of my favorite drummers, Mark Guiliana, playing with Donny McCaslin on their original composition, “Stadium Jazz.”  As always, I am very impressed with the with Mark’s speed and precision while playing very fast and complicated rhythms.  I especially appreciate this piece because of how well all of the musicians function together in a song that changes meter and feel multiple times.  A couple of things that I though were especially cool were the pianist muting the piano wire to give the piano a more percussive function around 3:06 and the band coming in together at full dynamics at 4:58 after Mark gives a soft visual signal to his bandmates.

I like the chorus effect by the keys player at 2:20. He might be using guitar pedals for that effect which i think is interesting. This song is interesting because it repeatedly and abruptly changes moods: it starts out with a lot of energy then goes into almost a ballad at 2:20, then returns with the energy at 2:52.

The performance of the piece definitely was meant to highlight Guiliana. With good reason, he’s great on the drums. The intro to the piece is really contrasted with the high energy loud mood of most of the rest of the song (besides the slow bit Saiganesh has mentioned). I like the percussive piano effect at the start of the drum solo too. It’s like they made the piano more percussive to allow the drums to be more lyrical.
