Please join us in celebrating IACUC Director, Dr. Esmeralda Meyer! She is the recipient of the 2022 ABSA International Everett Hanel, Jr. Presidential Award for her contributions to the biological safety profession and a co-author of a recent publication showcasing the EHSO activities during the COVID-19 pandemic (31 October 2022, available here). Dr. Meyer is also co-author of the third most cited paper published in Applied Biosafety with a focus on the ISO standard 35001 for Biorisk Management and High Reliability Organizations and their applicability to the COVID-19 pandemic (13 September 2021, available here).
Esmeralda Meyer joined the Environmental Health and Safety Office in November 2014; later, she was appointed the associate biosafety officer. Prior to that career switch, she was a medical doctor (Colombia) and a malaria researcher at the Emory Primate Center for 16 years. She brought her unique medical and research skills to the practice of biorisk management at Emory. She earned a Juris Master’s degree at Emory University School of Law with emphasis in Compliance in 2018. She holds two certifications from the Americal Biological Safety Association (ABSA International) in biological safety and one from the International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA). Currently, she is the director of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee at Emory, where she employs her animal research expertise, medical background, legal understanding, and biorisk management skills to the benefit of the IACUC. She enjoys volunteering her time and talent as a contributor to the ABSA Laboratory-Acquired Infections database, creating biosafety resources for handling emerging pathogens, and reviewing training modules for the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
We are extremely proud of Esmeralda’s many accomplishments and grateful to have her represent Emory and ORA IACUC in such a profound way!
Congratulations again, Dr. Meyer!
