First-Year Students Hitch a Ride at the Library’s LibCon Event

The Oxford College Library’s second whirlwind LibCon event upgraded its new student orientation to an all-inclusive first-class experience.  On Saturday August 24th, eight fast-paced ports of call greeted 500 new students in the Oxford College Library with a comprehensive orientation to “All Things Library”.

Oxford’s Library Leaders, WoWs, and iMentors worked as tour guides to direct the freshmen in multiple groups of 15 to each station as they traveled non-stop through the library all afternoon and into the evening.

LibCon’s main objective is to orient new students to the library’s resources and services through presentations and interactive games. Topics covered  included: the website, printing, research, course reserves, the game collection, book stacks, special collections, study rooms, and Emory’s Zero Landfill Waste Initiative.

This year, the students’ rotations were tracked by individual passports provided to the students that included a review of the information taught at each “port”, and were stamped at the completion of each station.

A Boarding Pass was included as a souvenir of their orientation experience with a tear-off ticket for a chance to win an iPad sponsored by the library. The lucky winners were: Miles Sterling, Bella Mattson, Shreya Krishan, and Tiffany Chen.

At the conclusion of the event, the students completed an assessment of the event to provide review information that will help the library plan for an even better LibCon 2020!
