Library Leaders excited to welcome new students to LibCon!

From “Talking Trash” to the buzz of pop culture in the Reading Nook, the Oxford College Library hosted its first LibCon complete with all the WoW factors and more to orient Oxford’s newest class to all things Library!  LibCon, named after DragonCon, had its own “parade.”

Oxford’s WoWs and Library Leaders led a “parade” of 530 first-year students in groups of 15 throughout the day on Saturday, August 25th through each of the 10 learning stations.

These 10-station, 3-minute knowledge pops were led by Oxford’s Library Leaders on how to get the most out of the library.  Stations included: (1) The Reading Nook—highlighting graphic novels, board games, and new books; (2) Info Desk—accessing course reserves; (3) Special Collections—signing the traditional Book of the College; (4) Technology Circle—learning about available equipment and software in the library; (5) Printing—viewing the EaglePrint process with a demo of how to print; (6) Research Resources—using the library website for research and booking research consultations with librarians; (7) Compact Shelving—observing the shelving system and operation of book stacks; (8) Study Rooms—scheduling spaces and use of room technology; (9) Recycling—“talking trash” about  Emory’s new Zero Waste policy and participating in a waste sorting game; and (10) Academic Integrity—signing the important Honor Code banner which will hang in the library throughout the year.

LibCon concluded with an iced coffee and lemonade bar and a gift pack for each student filled with candy, gum, chips, a coffee mug, along with a gift card for coffee and a cookie from Oxpresso.  The event was a smashing success and will become a new tradition for the library.
