Animal Farm by George Orwell (1945) When a farm is taken over by its overworked animals, they set out to create a society based on justice and equality. The satiric fable outlines the descent from a revolutionary to a tyrant. This adult fairy tale attacks those who would attack freedom with stunning clarity and scathing comedy.
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh (1945) is a novel that launched author Evelyn Waugh into popularity. The novel follows the life of Charles Ryder and his relationship to a wealthy catholic family in England in their manor called Brideshead Castle. This story transported readers in 1945 who were weary of war back to a time before global warfare – to a time of opulence and prestige.
Stuart Little by E.B. White (1945) tells the story of a mouse raised in a human family with his older brother George and Snowbell the cat. His adventure begins when his best friend, a bird named Margalo, disappears from her nest. Determined to find her, Stuart Little takes his search away from home for the first time and encounters plenty of excitement.
Black Boy by Richard Wright (1945) is an autobiography detailing Richard Wright’s growth in the Jim Crow south. It is a coming-of-age story that discusses what it means to be a black man in the American south. It is a meaningful text in our history for anyone wondering what it may have been like to grow up in this era.
