2021-22 Executive Board

President: Mellisa Xie
Mellisa has been part of Emory ASBMB since Spring of 2019, when she joined as Freshman Representative! She decided to join because she was interested in research and wanted to help others get involved in research on campus. She’s originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma and is currently a fourth-year studying biology and sociology. Mellisa is part of the Rieder Lab, where she studies genetic regulation in fruit flies. If she could learn to do anything, it would be to speak all the languages in the world. Her favorite indoor activity is binge-watching shows on Netflix, and her favorite outdoor activity is trying new restaurants!
Editor-in-Chief (Writing Committee Lead): Sahithi Gangaram
Sahithi has been part of Emory ASBMB since the beginning of her freshman year. She decided to join Emory ASBMB because she was interested in the club’s mentorship, networking opportunities, and wanted to join the Writing Committee to channel her love for writing and passion for science communication. She’s originally from Plano, Texas and is currently a second year studying quantitative sciences and Spanish at the Oxford campus. She researches about analyzing cryo-electron microscopy data with RELION image-processing software at the Liang Lab. If she could learn to do anything, she would learn how to scuba dive. Sahithi’s favorite indoor activity is painting, and her favorite outdoor activity is swimming! 

Vice President: Yena Woo
Yena has been part of Emory ASBMB since her freshman year, and she decided to join Emory ASBMB to immerse herself in a community surrounding research and scientific education. She also wanted to give back to the Emory community to help others navigate finding research opportunities. Yena is originally from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey and is currently a junior studying Chemistry and Anthropology on the pre-med track. She researches at Yerkes National Primate Research Center and focuses on the plasminogen activator system and its application in neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. If she could learn to do anything, she would learn how to play different sports such as speed skating, curling, and archery. Yena’s favorite indoor activity is Pilates, and her favorite outdoor activity is going on long walks!

Treasurer: Matt Wang
Matt has been part of Emory ASBMB for 1 year and decided to join because he enjoys biology and molecular biology. He thought Emory ASBMB was a great place to find a community of fellow biology enjoyers and premed enthusiasts. He is very happy to say that he found his people and community here at Emory ASBMB and is glad to help provide research mentorship and events to help others pursue their life goals. Matt is originally from Boston, Massachusetts and is currently a junior studying computer science. He is part of the HITI Lab at Emory where he studies machine learning methods intersected with healthcare interests. If he could learn to do anything, it would be to learn golf because it seems pretty fun. His favorite indoor activity is sleeping, and his favorite outdoor activity is swimming!
Outreach Director: Shraddha Hariharan
Shraddha joined Emory ASBMB this year because she wanted to be part of a community of like-minded individuals who are also passionate about biochemistry and molecular biology. She’s originally from Edison, New Jersey and is currently a freshman planning to study biology. She would like to conduct research in cancer, immunotherapy (cell and gene), or developmental therapeutics. If she could learn to do anything, she would like to learn a new language or learn to dance. Shraddha’s favorite indoor activities are reading and listening to music, and her favorite outdoor activity is going on walks!  
Oxford Representative: William Xu
William has been part of Emory ASBMB for one year now, and he decided to join Emory ASBMB because he wanted to be a part of a club that was dedicated in exploring the realm of research and providing insights on the paths he should take as someone who is planning on working in the med field. William is originally from the Bay Area and is currently a sophomore planning to study biology. He is part of Dr. Nkomo’s lab, where he studies oscillating chemical reactions! If he could learn to do anything, it would be to learn how to be a good role model for his siblings. William’s favorite indoor and outdoor activities are hanging out with friends!
Freshman Representative: Audrika Chattaraj
Audrika joined Emory ASBMB this year because she thinks what makes the discovery of knowledge so valuable (especially for scientific research) is the fact that we can formulate solutions that benefit the health and well-being of the whole. She’s originally from Basking Ridge, New Jersey and is currently a freshman studying human health. She is interested in fungal pathogen research. If she could learn to do anything, she would love to learn how to keep bees. Audrika’s favorite indoor activity is playing Club Penguin Rewritten, and her favorite outdoor activity is skateboarding!
