Definition:

A word to describe different categories of artistic media that share similar traits and characteristics. Genres may also to revolve around similar themes or writing styles.

Significance:

Genres are important since they provide a foundation for both readers and writers. Genres can help a first-time reader create a foundation of previous knowledge before they even start reading. By having an idea of similar writings, a reader may know what certain creative choices mean, or be prepared to explore certain topics as they read. For authors having an idea of their work’s genre can be helpful as they create an outline or basis for their writing. By comparing writings to similar works they can not only draw inspirations from other artists but also explore ideas within subjects that they are interested in.

Memoirs are a type of writing within the larger non-fiction writing that is usually details a specific part or parts of the author’s life.

Example 2: Plays

Plays are bodies of writing that are meant to be performed by actors on stage. These usually have elaborate character design and sets when performed.

Picture books are usually meant for young children to read or to be read by someone else. These tend to have few words, simple vocabulary, and clear main ideas to teach life lessons children through reading.
