One key strength I have when writing is I think I do well at supporting my argument with evidence (i.e. quotes from the text). I also think that I come up with creative arguments about the text. I like the process of formulating an argument and looking for “clues” in the text that back up that argument. The midterm being a close reading was conducive to this. I also enjoy getting into a flow when writing, which can sometimes be hard to get into but once I’m there the writing comes naturally. I particularly like writing about novels because I like exploring character motivations and what certain dialogue means.
Something I often struggle with when writing is organization. I feel that I tend to repeat myself, which drags out the essay and doesn’t do anything to help my point. I also can struggle to concisely frame what my point is. I’ll have ideas that somewhat go together, but I often need guidance to put in a sentence or two what my argument is. When writing the midterm, getting feedback from Tyler was really helpful. Having a second pair of eyes on my writing enabled me to see what I could expand on and what to include in the conclusion to close out the essay in an effective way.
