Olivia Ralston – Reading Journal 11

My addition to the syllabus would be Tomboy Survival Guide. I think most of the queer experiences focused on and found within the course are from growing up or living in a city or cultural center, while in this work, the experiences come from a small rural town.

Another possible addition to the course I could see adding is one of the Anthony Padilla interviews with someone in the queer community. He has interviewed several people of many different backgrounds, and for me, his approach is always helpful to see. This is because as someone who is straight/heteronormative, seeing someone else who falls into that category but is still respectful helps me to tailor my own approaches to similar issues. It is also not often we see a heteronormative approach that is helpful to the community, which these interviews somewhat highlight how to be helpful.
