It’s a New Year!

As the fall season has embarked upon us, so marks the beginning of Emory’s 2013 fiscal year.  The course has already been set that this year will be a remarkable year in research. Our funding levels have reduced slightly from $539,708,509 in FY11 to $518,574,278 in FY12.   Given the current funding environment and the fading of ARRA funding, all of our researchers and the administrators who provide support should be very proud of the strength of our research portfolio at Emory.  Many thanks are due to all of those that sought out and successfully obtained these research dollars.  During FY12, $915,959,465 of funding was requested in proposals which are an increase from $819,901,811 in FY11.  It is obvious that Emory is very committed to maintaining and growing our research funding.  Emory continues to stay in the forefront of new innovations and technologies in many fields of study because of the great work that is done in identifying and securing new research opportunities.

The final phases of fiscal year 2012 closeout are almost completed. Congratulations to you, the research community, for the strides that have been made to ensure that this year was successful. Coming out of 2012, as central, school and departmental administrators, we have worked together to improve the processes related to management of sponsored awards and identify alternative ways to handle the administration of sponsored funding.  While we still face a number of opportunities and challenges in the administration of our sponsored programs, we have continued to improve communication and collaboration within the research community over the past year.   These areas will be a continued focus over the next year.  The development of the new Sponsored Administration Management Kiosk (SAM) is near completion.  This system will allow departmental administrators to have a central location for most of the requests made to OSP and OGCA.  It will also allow all of us to track the progress of requests.  Look for more information over the next few weeks as the system is introduced to the Campus.  As we continue to move forward to 2013 we will be soliciting your continued efforts and support in a variety ways that will allow us all to work together to improve our ability to support research at Emory.  Thank you for your continued commitment to improving research administration at Emory.
